The Choir of the European Union was created in 1958 under the name of European Community Choir shortly after the signing of the Treaty of Rome. At its establishment it received the patronage of Walter Hallstein, President of the European Commission as well as Etienne Hirsch, President of the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom).

At the beginning of the sixties, the Choir inaugurated Easter Concerts at the St Michael Cathedral where they gave alternate performances of the St John and St Mathew Passions by Johan Sebastian Bach, in the presence of Queen Elizabeth of Belgium.

With the signature of the Maastricht Treaty and the transformation of the European Economic Community into the European Union, the Choir renamed itself the European Union Choir.

The year 2008 marked a half-century of the EUC's existence.
The celebrations included a series of exceptional concerts, culminating in the Gala Concert "ELIAS" by F. Mendelssohn (Orchestre National de Belgique, dir. Theodor Guschlbauer, winners of the Queen Elisabeth Competition).

In 2018 the Choir celebrated its 60th Anniversary. On March 23, the vocal ensemble kicked off its jubilee celebrations with a performance of Gioachino Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle (as part of the Concerts de Printemps 2018). The celebrations continued with a gala concert and one of the masterpieces of the 19th century: Ein deutsches Requiem by J. Brahms.

Since their advent in 1958, the objective of the EU Choir has been to perpetuate the heritage of great classical composers and to use music as the universal language that it is, as a link between the peoples of Europe and the world.  The Choir is composed of 80 singers coming from many different horizons and countries.
